The 2008
Southern Trust BMX NZ South Island Titles
were held on Sunday 13th January at the
Christchurch City BMX track in Hornby. 271
entries, the highest entries for a number of
years, meant that the racing was going to be
fast and furious. Over 40 riders came down
form the North Island to attempt to obtain a
South Island Title. With 33 classes ranging
from 6 & under mixed to 50 + Men, 20" ,
Cruiser and Superclass, racing 6 races, the
spectators were provided with spectacular
entertainment.
The weather was hot, water drunk continually
and the dust was flying. The Mainland North
BMX Region and Christchurch City BMX Club
provided excellent facilities with timely
racing, an excellent track and a formal
prizegiving at Hornby High School.
The largest class was the 9 Boys with 18
riders contesting to obtain the SI1 Plate.
The final was a fight between Chresten
Cockburn and Caleb Parish with Caleb taking
the deadman final 1st spot. Josh Burrows was
unlucky with a heavy fall in the first race
but went on to win 3 motos and finish 3rd
overall.
Shannon Alexander continued her great form
holding on to her SI1 spot from last year
for the 12-13 Girls. Shannon who has just
returned for racing in Australia currently
holds all titles, NZ1, NI1 and SI 1.The last
race of the day was the Superclass with 14
riders reduced to 8 in the final round.
Matthew Davies finished first, an excellent
race especially as Matthew has also only
just returned from racing in Australia.
The Mainland North BMX Region looks forward
to welcoming riders from all over New
Zealand for the 2008 BMX NZ Nationals to be
held at the North Avon Christchurch Club at
Easter.
